 Lao New Year—2009 Year of the Ox, April 18, 2009. The Lao New Year celebration this year was celebrated at Furama Restaurant and was a huge success for the Lao Community! There was a traditional Lao clothing fashion show, a kids fashion show from a designer of children clothing, Ms. Kareen Powell. One of our newest board members Mr. Michael Nanthavongsa hosted the event along with Ms. Jesse Le and Ms.

Happy New Year!!
LACS had an awesome turnout for our December 31, 2008 New Year Celebration party which was held at Furama Restaurant. We realize that everyone had many options for bringing in the New Year and are very thankful that you decided to spend it with us and, in addition, help raise funds for LACS. LACS raised $4,770. Congratulations to Nada Touma for winning the 1st prize Raffle, Zack Phoxay for winning the 2nd prize Raffle, Phyroath Chhun for winning the 3rd prize Raffle and Phanthamaly Phoxay for winning the special raffle prize!

Hello to all! We hope you had a great summer and are enjoying the great fall weather. Here’s what’s been going on in the Lao Community over the last couple of months: The Lao Community suffered a loss as one of our young people were taken at the springtime of her life. LACS was there to help support the family of Melissa Oudumvilay who lost her life in August 2008. LACS staff and board members attended her wake on August 29th and the funeral on August 30th. May her next life journey not be wrought with such suffering. The Asian Fusion Festival held in Elgin on August 30, 2008. It was a huge success! Vendors came to sell their wares, food and fun for the families and a bit of fundraising! Thavone was able to attend this event, thank you Thavone for representing the Chicago Lao Community at this event! LACS hosted its annual funeral Fundraising event on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at International Buffet in Elgin. Special thanks to Champadeng Keovanpeng, Event Chair and Norsasing Kethdy, Event Vice-Chair for organizing this fundraising event.
Champadeng, Yin Kean, and Khamphoui congratulate Ai Khong’s wife who won 1st and 3rd of the raffle prizes, congratulations! Sisavath Panyathip and Bounrod Bounvayong, just enjoying the party. Khamphoui, Contessa and Mr. Putnam (Saysamone’s husband), just enjoying the party.

Many thanks to the people that attended this event despite the torrential rains and flooding. We were very saddened to learn that a couple of our board members experienced heavy, property damaging flooding in their homes. Despite the intervention of nature, we still were able to raise funds for the funeral fund and thank all of the people who made it out to the event.

LACS Annual Picnic was held on September 6, 2008 and turned out to be a really great picnic! There were some challenges to getting people to the picnic site; however, there were many people who did make it and it was a great end to the summer. Thanks to everyone who attended. Special thanks to Jesse and Contessa for arranging the picnic site and getting there early to secure the location. Here are some of the pictures from the Picnic, it looks like everyone had a great time!
